It’s Convocation Day at the independent school where I serve as the head. Somehow, this seems like the perfect date to launch this blog, as both the are ways for us to establish and build community. The first is rooted in academic traditions, the latter strives to take advantage of the latest in technology. Similar ends but very different means.
Our assembly today focused on the recent Olympics in Beijing, and a wide variety of students spoke about the way that they experienced the games and learned about cultural differences and similarities. They didn’t use this vocabulary, but they reminded us of just how “flat” the world has become and the interconnectedness of all nations. And as we call upon our students to “pursue their passions and lead lives of purpose and excellence” — to quote from our mission statement — today’s convocation program shows us that those lives will be taking place in multi-connected, multi-cultural world.
So, what do I hope to do here? I look forward to posting a few times each month on things that are happening at school, news in the world of education, and observations about events in the local, national and international communities. We have a great year ahead of us, and I am eager to open this channel of communication with my readers. I look forward to your comments (though I won’t be able to give individual responses to them) and to learning more about your perspective on the school(s) you (or your children) attend and education in general.
